K-12 Robotics Competition and Childhood Leukemia Fundraiser Set for Woodlawn High School

Baton Rouge – Robotics teams from Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas will descend on the campus of Woodlawn High School Saturday, September 12 to compete to be the winner of the Dow Red Stick Rumble, an off-season FIRST® (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition and Festival.


High school and middle school students will be competing with robots that vary in size from small toaster-sized bots up to large robots nearing 5 feet tall and 120 pounds. While there, elementary and middle school students will build and design robots for the new season of the FIRST® Lego League program and FIRST® Tech Challenge teams will be participating in a live broadcast that kicks-off the new game for the 2015-2016 season. The public is invited to attend, free of charge, to see how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics can change lives and motivate students.


Lifeshare Blood Center and student volunteers will also be on hand to collect blood and monetary donations in support of For the Love of Laina, a local effort to support a young girl suffering with childhood leukemia.


The doors open to the public at 8 a.m. with the competition is scheduled to last until at least 4 p.m. Food will be provided by area food trucks as well as the Woodlawn JROTC Snack Bar. The school is located at 15755 Jefferson Hwy.

FIRST® Robotics, founded by inventor Dean Kamen, is an international sanctioning organization for robotics competitions that allows students to compete for awards and scholarships based on their robotics team performance, community service, and business acumen.
