Increase in Cohort Graduation Rate lays groundwork for continued improvement

May. 2 2016

East Baton Rouge Parish School System received a 67.2 District Cohort Graduation Rate for 2014-2015 when the Louisiana Department of Education released cohort graduation rates Monday.  The score represents a 1 percentage point increase over the previous year, which district administrators hope to use as a starting point for a comprehensive plan to improve student outcomes.

“We are looking at this data as a baseline. These rates are based on the graduating class of 2015. This is an issue we have been addressing well in advance of this release, and have plans in place to make dramatic improvements in this area,” said Superintendent Warren Drake.
Current plans to improve cohort graduation rates include:

  • Piloting High Schools of Excellence program
    • Expands opportunities to students across the district in Jump Start pathways
    • College and career institute on each campus increases dual enrollment and AP offerings
  • Strengthening blended and virtual learning programs
    • Eliminates barriers for students by offering non-traditional learning environments
  • Moving high schools to a common modified block schedule for the 2016-2017 school year
    • Standardizes scheduling in a high-mobility population
    • Creates more opportunities for credit accumulation, increasing the number from 28 to 32 opportunities for course credit over the student’s 4 years of high school
  • Providing comprehensive college and career readiness counseling
    • Conducting frequent transcript audits and monitoring of student progress
    • Completing individual graduation plan and Jump Start meetings with students and parents
    • Hosting collaborative professional development for staff
