On March 3rd, the Exceptional Student Services Department held its PAES Lab Open House at Arlington Academy. The two- session activity featured an overview of the lab and job demonstrations on a few of the 240 jobs in the lab. The demos were conducted by students from Arlington Academy. Instilling mindset of getting to a work site, the student- workers executed their work routines, including but not limited to, clocking- in, getting the job card, finishing the job, and clocking out. Some of the work performed by student- workers included wrapping hamburgers, assembling nuts and bolts, alphabetizing by last name, putting cards in order with a card sorter, and a few more. Each session ended with a question- and- answer activity among the participants, student- workers, and teacher- supervisors. The participants, including a representative from the Governor’s Office of Disability Affairs, local agencies, school district personnel, and service providers also got a chance to experience the district’s Independent Living Lab (mini- apartment).
The PAES Lab at Arlington has been put in place to increase robust instruction on vocational skills for students with significant disabilities who are in Community- based Programs. It further aims to help students gain strong employability skills to increase opportunities for post- secondary employment and independence.
Next month, the department will open two more PAES labs at Belaire and Glen Oaks High Schools.
