Conn’s HomePlus, First Book Visits Twin Oaks Elementary to Donate Books to Kids and “Book Reading Nook” to School’s Library

Oct. 18 2016

More than 100 kindergartners and 1st graders from Twin Oaks Elementary in Baton Rouge celebrated the return to their school with a book reading party hosted by Conn’s HomePlus and First Book. Twin Oaks was significantly impacted by the flooding in August. Students recently returned to the school after starting the school year learning at LOCATION.

Students decorated Little Free Libraries that will be distributed to the community. The students were joined by local Conn’s HomePlus employees who read books to kids and donated 1,000 books for the students to take home. Conn’s HomePlus also donated furniture to the school’s library to serve as a “book reading nook.”

The book reading party is a component of the Conn’s Cares philanthropic program, which helps improve the communities it serves by empowering children. In 2016, the Company is visiting several schools to host book reading parties and donate new books with its partner First Book, a nonprofit social enterprise that puts books in the hands of children who need them most.

“This book and furniture donation from Conn’s HomePlus and First Book is so meaningful as we rebuild and move back in to our school,” says Melissa Mayon, Principal of Twin Oaks Elementary. “We are so grateful to be able to give our students new books to take home so our students can further grow their love of reading.”

Conn’s HomePlus is also partnering with Little Free Library, an organization that connects communities through reading. Conn’s will distribute the libraries — small, handcrafted houses for books that are posted in communities — to encourage the exchange of books among neighbors.
